The Hampton Style has been on everyone’s lips lately, and it’s no wonder why this stunning design from the USA has influenced home design globally.

An elegant, sophisticated design which exudes a luxurious feel while radiating warmth and coziness. The Hamptons style is so popular, as it combines classic decorating, with rustic influences to create the perfect coastal retreat. The style can also be used to renovate an existing Queenslander, keeping the charm, while modernizing the look for comfort, timelessness and functionality. Here is a style guide, on how you can create the classic Hamptons House or cool beach house with style.

Some of the key elements of the Hampton Style:

  • The external space should be as well designed as your interior space so that the spaces connect seamlessly together to bring the outdoors in to create a calm and beachy feeling.

  • An emphasis on natural lighting including large windows and shutters for a look that is light and airy. Artificial lighting should create a soft ambience.

  • Inviting spaces such as little nooks and crannies for relaxation. Think inbuilt bench seats, reading room or a little study nook.

  • Interior detail, focusing on cabinetry detail throughout the home, exposed beams, timber flooring and panelling.

  • Marble and stone benchtops for the kitchen with lots of open shelving.

  • Homely features, natural fabrics, soft and beachy furnishings and accessories.

  • A colour scheme that draws from nature- beach and sand, soft greys, light blues and greens with lots of natural white.

  • Gable style roof with large balconies

Here are five tips that will help you master the Hamptons:

1) Traditional Features - Typical features of a Hampton Style Home include vee-joint lining, wainscoting, high raking ceiling; and externally weatherboards, shingles and gable roofs. Going grand with high ceilings in living spaces will create a sense of luxury.

2) Cabinetry and Hardware - In a Hampton style home, you will find a popular cabinet door profile the shaker style or VJ profile. Paired with traditional tapware and door handles will be a good start to a beautiful Hampton kitchen.

Extra Tip: Why not have overhead cabinets that have a criss-cross style door with glass panels to showcase your homewares.

3) Windows - It’s very popular to find decorative and high windows in Hampton style homes. Extra Tip: like most colours for the Hampton style keeping it neutral with a bold trim will help achieve the look.

4) Feature Pendant Lights - You will often find classic looking pendant lights over a kitchen island bench, at the entry way or over the bathroom vanity. Keeping it symmetrical and grand will achieve the Hampton look in no time.

5) A Touch of Coastal Decorating - To complete your Hampton home, you can’t forget to add a bit of coastal charm. Lots of texture and neutral colour with tones of green and blue.
